What’s in a name?

1. Who is this lady?  
This lady is Irini Kemara in Maori (Irene) in English.

2. What does her name mean?  
Her name means peace.

3. Who was the photographer?
The photographer was Samuel Carnell.

4. Why was he well known?
Because he took a lot of striking portraits of Maori during the 1800s.

5. Why is she sitting with her left side facing the camera?
She is facing the camera with her left side because she and the photographer wanted us to see her tattoos.

6. What does moko kauae mean?
Moko Kauae means a chin-tattoo and that she came from a good family.

7. What is the Maori name for Bella?
The Maori name for Bella is Pera.

8. How do we know that she was proud of her tattoos?
She was proud of her tattoos because it had some important names on it and she did not try to hide them.  She wanted us to see them.

9. Describe her clothing.
Irini wore both Maori and Pakeha clothing.

10. Why do you think the book is important enough to be in the photo?
Because she has some photos inside the book of her family and friends.
